Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch

Statement as of 6:45 AM CDT on May 24, 2015

Expires 8:00 AM EDT on May 25, 2015

... The Flood Advisory for heavy rain remains in effect until 1000 am
CDT for Barton... Jasper... McDonald... Newton and Vernon counties...

At 642 am CDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
light to moderate rainfall across the advisory area. Radar estimates
that one and a half to two and a half inches of rain has fallen
across the advisory area since Saturday evening... with the highest
amounts near the Kansas state line. This is likely resulting in
minor flooding of creeks and low lying areas.

Runoff from this heavy rainfall will cause minor flooding. Creeks...
streams and low water crossings will be especially susceptible to the
dangers of flooding.

This advisory includes but is not limited to the following low water
crossings...

Highway 43 at Buffalo Creek west of Anderson...
north main and Murphy Boulevard in Joplin...
business Highway 60 just north of Neosho...
Highway 37 at the Spring River southwest of Avilla...
Route k at Dry Wood creek east of Arcadia.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Monday morning...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of southeast Kansas and Missouri... including the
following areas... in southeast Kansas... Bourbon... Cherokee
and Crawford. In Missouri... Barton... Benton... Cedar... Dade...
Hickory... Morgan... Polk... St. Clair and Vernon.

* Through Monday morning

* multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms will impact
southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri this weekend. Moderate
to occasionally heavy rain will continue today over southeast
Kansas and far western Missouri with a slow eastward spread
toward the Highway 65 corridor through tonight. The heaviest
rainfall will occur along and west of Interstate 49 through
Sunday night. Total rainfall amounts of one and a half to three
inches are expected through tonight.

* This excessive rainfall may result in flash flooding of small
streams and low water crossings as well as significant rises
and flooding of some main Stem rivers.

The Osage... Little Osage... Marmaton and Spring River basins along
with Lightning Creek will be impacted and could experience
flooding.

Those with outdoor recreational plans over southeast Kansas into
western Missouri this Memorial Day weekend including camping and
floating along area rivers and streams should be alert for rising
water levels.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.
